SUMMARY:Grub Street Writers' Open Mic - Featuring L Scully and Kara Urion
DESCRIPTION:Writers’ Open Mic is a monthly open mic event featuring all literary genres. Prose\, poetry\, flash fiction\, pages from your graphic novel\, a haiku about Market Basket; whatever you’re working on\, come and dazzle a live audience in a low-key\, supportive atmosphere. \n\n\n\nConnect with a literary community\, have a drink or two\, hear inspiring features from established and emerging writers\, and be the first to know what’s new and next in Boston’s lit scene. \n\n\n\nDoors open at 6:30 to sign up for one of the coveted slots to read. Readings start at 7pm\, with features at 8pm. \n\n\n\nWriters’ Open Mic is free to attend\, 18+\, and registration is requested. Alcohol will be for sale for 21+ attendees. \n\n\n\nFeatured readers: \n\n\n\nL Scully (Nonfiction\, January 2023) is a living writer. They are the author of the recently released poetry collection SELF-ROMANCING from DOPAMINE Books and Semiotext(e). L is the cofounder of Stone of Madness Press\, a literary magazine publishing queer\, trans\, and neurodiverse experiences\, and the founder of [Working Title}\, a New England-based queer literary event series supporting emerging writers. In 2024\, L was an awardee of the Independent Press Award’s “40 Under 40 in Publishing\,” and they recently received a 2026 Grant for Creative Individuals from Massachusetts Cultural Council. They swim outside all year\, even in the winter. \n\n\n\nKara Urion is a writer currently based in Dorchester who has spent much of her life between Oakland\, CA and an island off the coast of Maine. She has been an educator at Rikers Island\, San Quentin State Prison and San Francisco Art Institute\, and has worked in restaurants\, the fishing industry\, and as an interpreter. She was a 2025 Emerging Writer Fellow at GrubStreet\, Fiction Editor at REVOLUTE magazine\, and is currently pursuing her MFA in Prose at Randolph College. Her work explores mental illness\, memory\, addiction\, and climate witness. You can find her in the water.

An interdisciplinary artist and licensed builder\, she lectures at the University of Michigan and has received residencies and fellowships from Yale\, Vermont Studio Center\, Community of Writers\, the Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, and elsewhere. She spins the O is for Octopus substack & is the biographer of CD Wright. \n\n\n\nA poet\, editor\, and occasional critic\, Michael Mercurio lives and writes in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts. His poems\, interviews\, and reviews have been published or are forthcoming in Palette Poetry\, Thrush\, The Common\, Cream City Review\, Sierra (the magazine of the Sierra Club)\, Sugar House Review\, Lily Poetry Review\, and elsewhere. In the summer of 2025\, Michael participated in the Bread Loaf Environmental Writers’ Workshop. \n\n\n\nMichael is the founder and curator of What The Universe Is: A (Virtual) Reading Series\, where established and emerging poets read together monthly on Zoom. In addition\, he posts regular dispatches on his Substack\, A Slight Case of Overthinking\, including close readings of notable poems and musings on life as an aging Gen Xer.
