SUMMARY:Poet Swap: Not the Poetry Reading You’re Used To with Kate Kearns\, Mike Bove and David Stankiewicz
DESCRIPTION:Kate Kearns (Poetry\, June 2008)\, Mike Bove and David Stankiewicz are shaking up the usual poetry reading format. \n\n\n\nWhy? Because at a normal reading\, there’s surprise and discovery for the audience\, but there’s none for the poet. In a poet swap\, the poet gets to see their own work in a new and likely uncomfortable way\, and the audience gets the added bonus of watching them squirm. \n\n\n\nWhat’s a poet swap? It’s like a body swap for a body of work. A trust fall. A torture wheel. Instead of presenting their own writing\, each reader will present one of the other poets’ work\, which they’ve had time to read and prepare. \n\n\n\nAt this event\, Kate Kearns will present Mike Bove’s poetry\, Mike will present David’s\, and David will present Kate’s. The poet whose work is being read has no idea what poems the reader has chosen\, what order they’re in\, or what context will come with them. The only rule is all poems must be read word for word\, true to the original. \n\n\n\nKate Kearns is the author of You Are Ruining My Loneliness (Littoral Books\, 2023) and How to Love an Introvert (Finishing Line Press\, 2015). Kate’s work has appeared in Rustica\, the Maine Sunday Telegram\, Salamander\, Peregrine\, Sugar House Review and elsewhere. Kate was a finalist for the Charles Simic Memorial Prize and the 2024 Maine Postmark Competition. She earned her MFA from Lesley University. Learn more at www.katekearns.com. \n\n\n\nMike Bove is a prize-winning author of four books of poetry. His poems have appeared in Rattle\, Southern Humanities Review\, Tar River Poetry\, Rust & Moth\, and many others. He served as a 2024 Writer-in-Residence at Acadia National Park and is Associate Editor for Hole in the Head Review. Mike lives with his family in Portland\, Maine where he was born and raised. www.mikebove.com \n\n\n\nDavid Stankiewicz is the author of two poetry books: Night Garden (Deerbrook Editions 2024) and My First Beatrice (Moon Pie Press 2013). A graduate of the Stonecoast MFA program\, David is a professor of English at Southern Maine Community College. He lives in Cape Elizabeth with his family.

SUMMARY:CCW Presents: To Die Is Different Than Supposed by Alissa Butterworth\, Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual celebration of Alissa Butterworth’s (Fiction\, June 2012) debut novel\, To Die Is Different Than Supposed! Registration required. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe died by bicycle\, by a breakfast gone bad\, by a fist\, a broken promise\, a rowboat\, letters no one else was supposed to see.Twenty years ago\, the Gable family was nearly perfect—five siblings growing up in an old farmhouse in Pennsylvania with supposedly loving parents. But when a series of devastating events rocks the family—a house fire\, the death of their young brother\, infidelity\, and betrayal—the siblings are left shattered and lost.Jackson is the oldest\, the distant wanderer. Lex is trapped on the other side\, desperately trying to communicate. Adrian is on the verge of a breakdown. Ella is haunted\, finding comfort in a familiar ghost. Remy is the embittered “good” son. And Calvin is the youngest\, the half-brother trying to make sense of inherited pain. When the estranged siblings come together for their father’s funeral\, they must reckon with his legacy of abuse and abandonment\, and with the secrets they kept from each other for so long. Will Jackson find it in himself to tell the horrific story the family most needs to hear? Or will they all be forever trapped by their complicated pasts\, unable to move into a more hopeful and united future?

This is a whimsical\, moving story about the universal desire to be seen and understood and how art can help us find connection\, even when we are at our loneliest. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe One and Only Ivan meets The Wild Robot\, in this unique and deeply moving middle grade novel about the journey of a fictional Mars rover\, from Jasmine Warga\, the Newbery Honor-winning author of Other Words for Home. Meet Resilience\, a Mars rover determined to live up to his name. Res was built to explore Mars. He was not built to have human emotions. But as he learns new things from the NASA scientists who assemble him\, he begins to develop human-like feelings. Maybe there’s a problem with his programming… Human emotions or not\, launch day comes\, and Res blasts off to Mars\, accompanied by a friendly drone helicopter named Fly. But Res quickly discovers that Mars is a dangerous place filled with dust storms and giant cliffs. As he navigates Mars’s difficult landscape\, Res is tested in ways that go beyond space exploration. As millions of people back on Earth follow his progress\, will Res have the determination\, courage — and resilience — to succeed…and survive? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJasmine Warga is the #1 New York Times-bestselling author of middle grade novels Other Words For Home\, The Shape of Thunder\, and A Rover’s Story. Other Words For Home earned multiple awards\, including a John Newbery Honor\, a Walter Honor for Young Readers\, and a Charlotte Huck Honor. The Shape of Thunder was a School Library Journal and Bank Street best book of the year\, a finalist for the Barnes & Noble Children’s and YA Book Award\, and has been named to several state award reading lists. She is also the author of young adult novel\, My Heart and Other Black Holes\, which has been translated into over twenty different languages. Her next middle grade novel\, A STRANGE THING HAPPENED IN CHERRY HALL\, will be published on September 10th\, 2024. Originally from Cincinnati\, she now lives in the Chicago-area with her family in a house filled with books.

SUMMARY:Adam Theater Presents: Library Lion
DESCRIPTION:“‬Library Lion\,” based on one of Time Magazine’s 100 ‬best Children’s books of all time\, by Michelle Knudsen (WFYP\, MFA Writing Faculty). The musical play features a cast of five actors and three puppeteers who operate a puppet designed and built by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop with live music. Directed by award winning director\, Ran Bechor. \n\n\n\nAfter all spots of the inaugural show as a site-specific play at Boston Public Library have been taken – Adam Theater is proud to present for the first time in the USA the theater adaptation of Library Lion. In the library\, there are books. But also very clear rules: no shouting\, no running\, no eating or drinking. But what happens when one day a lion enters the library? He doesn’t roar or rampage\, and contrary to expectations\, he peacefully joins storytelling hour. Not everyone is okay with this\, after all\, he doesn’t abide by the rules. (A lion? In the library? – that’s completely out of order!) It will be revealed that rules are important to follow\, but not only that: That it is also very important\, here and there\, to dust off some of these rule books as well. \n\n\n\nPlaywright & Lyrics by Eli Bijaoui\, Award winning Director Ran Bechor\, Music by Yoni Rechter.

SUMMARY:Presentation and Signing: Where Are You\, Echo Blue? by Hayley Krishcher
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to a presentation and signing at Asbury Book Cooperative with Hayley Krischer (Fiction\, June 2009) presenting her newest title\, WHERE ARE YOU\, ECHO BLUE? \n\n\n\nAward-winning journalist and YA novelist Hayley Krischer makes her adult novel debut with WHERE ARE YOU\, ECHO BLUE? (Dutton; on sale July 16\, 2024)\, a whirlwind tale of celebrity\, fandom\, and the price of ambition. The novel follows both Goldie Klein\, a scrappy young journalist trying to make it in the New York magazine world\, and the object of her admiration\, Echo Blue\, the most famous child star of thenineties who goes missing on the eve of the millennium. When Echo disappears ahead of a highly publicized New Year’s Eve television appearance\, most people assume it’s because she’s gotten herself into trouble. After all\, between strained family relationships\, a high-profile relationship with a Hollywood “bad boy\,” and a stint in rehab\, she’s no stranger to drama. But Goldie is Echo’s biggest fan and knows there must be more to the story. Determined to make this investigation her big media break\, she sets off for L.A. in search of Echo—and the truth. \n\n\n\nGoldie\, and readers\, fall deep into Echo’s complicated past\, following her rise from plucky child star to ingenue to rebel. The more Goldie unearths\, the more she questions her own complicity in the young star’s downfall\, but it becomes impossible to pull herself away. Alternating perspectives between the two women until their twin journeys collide\, WHERE ARE YOU\, ECHO BLUE? is a sharp interrogation of celebrity culture\, the thin line between admiration and obsession\, and what it means to tell other peoples’ stories. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHayley Krischer has earned critical acclaim for her moving YA novels\, Something Happened to AliGreenleaf and The Falling Girls. She also spent two decades as a journalist\, examining culture and interviewing celebrities—including Gabrielle Union\, Celine Dion\, and former child star Tatum O’Neal—for publications like the New York Times\, Marie Claire\, and the Atlantic.

SUMMARY:Music Into Written Word with Erin Cecilia Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Erin Cecilia Thomas (Jan ’23\, Fiction) will be instructing the seminar\, ‘Music Into Written Word.’ \n\n\n\nHow can writers translate the intangible experience of listening to or performing music into written words? This seminar will look at the work of writers who use music in their narratives and the craft elements they employ\, such as syntax\, sentence structure\, metaphor\, rhythm\, and tone. We will look at examples of how writing styles vary according to the musical genre being described\, and how other elements such as character and setting affect how the reader interprets a scene that revolves around music. Samples of music will be played followed by text that describes the music to show how these techniques are applied. We will listen to a piece of music and free-write\, and volunteers can present their writing for discussion.

SUMMARY:Around the World Book Signing with Jorge Armenteros
DESCRIPTION:Visit the English bookshop Librairie Masséna Around the World (58 Rue Gioffredo) in Nice\, France on Saturday 9th November from 5pm to 7pm when author Jorge Armenteros (Fiction\, June 2012) will be signing copies of his latest book – The Curvature of an Absence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt the edge of a vanishing sea and under the light of a fading sun\, two writers struggle to understand the sudden absence of affective and natural elements from their lives. As they seek a beautiful but rather elusive presence\, they are forced to confront that which is no longer there. To unravel the mysterious absences\, they embark on the improbable project of writing a book. Their erratic journey produces a book that reveals nothing and everything\, but above all\, that reflects the ardent light of a nascent understanding. \n\n\n\nJorge Armenteros was born in 1961 in Havana. Persecuted by the regime\, his family sought asylum as political refugees in Madrid. Soon after\, the USA granted his family entry and they transitioned through Tampa before settling in Puerto Rico. He was the first student in his school to be accepted to Harvard University. There he took several courses in Spanish and Latin American Literature while completing his biomedical engineering degree. Literature\, nonetheless\, was breathing inside of him. So\, he decided to pursue an MFA in creative writing at Lesley University in Cambridge. The Curvature of an Absence is his seventh novel.

SUMMARY:Author Night with Megan Doney & Chanlee Luu
DESCRIPTION:Join Blacksburg Books as they host Megan Doney (WFYP\, June 2008) and Chanlee Luu\, winners of the Washington Writers Publishing House Prize in nonfiction and poetry\, respectively. The authors will read from their books as well as talk about the writing process and getting published with a small press. \n\n\n\nMegan Doney – Unarmed: An American Educator’s Memoir \n\n\n\nAfter surviving a school shooting at New River Community College in Christiansburg\, Virginia\, English professor Megan Doney was traumatized and adrift. Rather than hardening her heart and life\, she wrote Unarmed: An American Educator’s Memoir. An insightful response to American gun violence and illusions of public and private safety\, it’s also about her journey over the past decade toward living with an open heart\, alive to luck\, learning\, and love. \n\n\n\nChanlee Luu – The Machine Autocorrects Code to I \n\n\n\nA knock-out debut that erases the boundaries of time and geography with unrestrained wit\, The Machine Autocorrects Code to I holds its subjects – family members at odds with their hopes and fears\, various fruits and animals constrained by the laws of humans\, and an alien seeking beauty in the world – with tenderness and wry knowledge of the fragile systems that hold their world in place. This universe of poems wanders through the messy past\, battles in the charged present\, and dreams/nightmares to the unknown future. In this experiment in forms\, Chanlee Luu is a mad scientist\, cracking Asian jokes\, shoveling golden sand\, and coding her voice to vitality.
