SUMMARY:Writing by Ear: Incorporating the Poetic\, with Michael Mercurio
DESCRIPTION:Every writer—no matter how accomplished they may be—feels the pressure of finding the right words to invigorate their manuscripts\, to tell stories that resonate with readers and that linger for a long time. In this half-day workshop\, writers will explore how the origins of words we use and the sounds of them can enhance their writing across any and all genres. Incorporating these poetic sensibilities into your work can help to create meaning you didn’t know was there and to get your work to stand out when it crosses an editor’s desk. This workshop will include a brief history lesson on the peculiarities of the English language\, an opportunity to discuss some tried-and-true strategies for using words as springboards for inspiration\, and plenty of time to write.

SUMMARY:Memoirs of a Black Girl - Q & A with The Boston Globe
DESCRIPTION:Join The Boston Globe‘s Black History Month Film Festival in a virtual screening and discussion of Thato Mwosa’s (WSS\, June 2017) first narrative feature\, Memoirs of a Black Girl. \n\n\n\nMemoirs of a Black Girl is a Coming-of-Age feature drama that explores the lives of diverse urban students in an underserved High School in Roxbury\, MA. The protagonist\, Aisha Johnson\, a young black girl who epitomizes “black girl magic\,” is one of four city-wide finalists for a prestigious college scholarship. In order to win the award\, Aisha must outperform the other candidates. Under normal circumstances\, these things would prove easy for Aisha\, whose academic history has shown nothing but excellence. But these aren’t normal circumstances. Aisha’s world is turned upside down when she reports on the school’s resident “it girls\,” for smoking weed in the bathroom at school. Aisha is targeted for being a “snitch.” She must learn not only to navigate the challenging obstacles but to survive while keeping her eyes on the prize.

SUMMARY:My City of Dreams -- Lisa Gruenberg
DESCRIPTION:Join Lisa Gruenberg (Nonfiction\, June 2007) as she speaks virtually about her memoir\, My City of Dreams\, through Temple Concord in Syracuse\, NY. \n\n\n\nIn this carefully researched and hauntingly written memoir\, Lisa Gruenberg records not only her own life\, but also that of relatives long lost to darkness\, terror\, and murder. In dreamlike sequences she weaves known facts of the lives of those lost into tableaus of imagined family dinners\, conversations\, and leisure activities set in the Vienna landscape. She embodies her aunt Mia as she walks in her shoes\, sees with her eyes\, and speaks with her voice. These flights into the past are presented within the framework of Gruenberg’s own family\, her husband and daughters\, and her father. He escaped from Vienna in 1939 and shared few of his memories with her\, and those only late in life. \n\n\n\nThe trauma and feelings of guilt often described in Holocaust survivors is reflected in this memoir\, also the burden shared by so many of their children and grandchildren. At the same time\, this tale is one of lightness and finding balance. My City of Dreams is an important landmark in 21st century testimony of the Holocaust. Read an excerpt from the book. \n\n\n\n—Sabine Hildebrandt\, author of Anatomy of a Murder: Ethical Transgressions and Anatomical Science during the Third Reich

SUMMARY:Michael Lowenthal & Christopher Castellani author talk: Sex with Strangers
DESCRIPTION:A book discussion with Michael Lowenthal (Fiction\, MFA Writing Faculty) in conversation with Christopher Castellani on Lowenthal’s new story collection. Participants will be able to purchase books signed by the author. See the event page for details. \n\n\n\nSex with Strangers is a fiercely honest exploration of the risks and rewards of contemporary relationships—and hookups. The collection embraces the dizzying power of attraction across the spectrum of passion and infatuation. In this fearless collection\, lust and loneliness drive a diverse cast of queer and straight characters into sometimes precarious entanglements. \n\n\n\nRecognizing that any partner is unknowable on some level\, Michael Lowenthal writes about how intimacy can make strangers of us all. A newly ordained priest struggles with guilt and longing when he runs into his ex-girlfriend. A woman weighs the cost of protecting her daughter from a man they both adore. A teenage busboy has a jolting brush with a famous musician. A young man tries to salvage a long-distance relationship while caring for his mentor\, an erotic writer dying of AIDS. \n\n\n\nIn edgy\, disquieting stories\, Lowenthal traces the paths that attraction and erotic encounters take\, baffling and rueful as often as electrifying. This fraught and funny volume forces us to grapple with our own subconscious desires and question how well we can ever really know ourselves. \n\n\n\nMichael Lowenthal is the author of four novels: Charity Girl\, The Paternity Test\, Avoidance\, and The Same Embrace. He lives in Roslindale and teaches in the MFA in Creative Writing program at Lesley University. \n\n\n\nModerator Christopher Castellani is the author of five books\, most recently the novel Leading Men. He is the artistic director of GrubStreet.

SUMMARY:Virtual Book Launch with Andrea Wang & Jason Chin
DESCRIPTION:Join Second Star to celebrate the launch of WATERCRESS with award-winning local author\, Andrea Wang (WFYP\, June 2011)\, and illustrator\, Jason Chin! \n\n\n\nAndrea Wang is the award-winning author of The Nian Monster and Magic Ramen: The Story of Momofuku Ando. She was inspired to write Watercress by her experience growing up in rural Ohio as a child of Chinese immigrants. Andrea holds an M.S. in Environmental Science and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing for Young People. She lives in Colorado with her family. \n\n\n\nJason Chin is a celebrated author and illustrator of children’s books. His book Grand Canyon was awarded a Caldecott Honor\, a Sibert Honor\, and the NCTE Orbis Pictus Award. He is the author and illustrator of Your Place in the Universe\, as well as other acclaimed nonfiction titles—Coral Reefs\, Redwoods\, Gravity\, and Island: A Story of the Galapagos—which have received numerous starred reviews and other accolades. He lives in Vermont with his wife and children. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE BOOK \n\n\n\nGathering watercress by the side of the road brings a girl closer to her family’s Chinese Heritage. \n\n\n\nDriving through Ohio in an old Pontiac\, a young girl’s parents stop suddenly when they spot watercress growing wild in a ditch by the side of the road. Grabbing an old paper bag and some rusty scissors\, the whole family wades into the muck to collect as much of the muddy\, snail covered watercress as they can. At first\, she’s embarrassed. Why can’t her family get food from the grocery store? But when her mother shares a story of her family’s time in China\, the girl learns to appreciate the fresh food they foraged. Together\, they make a new memory of watercress. Andrea Wang tells a moving autobiographical story of a child of immigrants discovering and connecting with her heritage\, illustrated by award winning author and artist Jason Chin\, working in an entirely new style\, inspired by Chinese painting techniques. An author’s note in the back shares Andrea’s childhood experience with her parents.
