SUMMARY:How to Make Your Dialogue Really Talk with Benjamin Roesch
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Benjamin Roesch (Fiction\, January 2016) \n\n\n\nCourse Description: \n\n\n\nWe talk to other people all the time. Speech is at the center of our lives. Which begs the question: why is writing dialogue in fiction SO hard? And why does it so often fall flat or feel fake? \n\n\n\nIn this 2-hour\, interactive workshop\, we’ll dig into what makes dialogue tick. We’ll drink from the keg of dialogue masters like Ernest Hemingway and Judy Blume who can help us mere mortals improve our craft. Participants should come ready to write\, think\, discover\, and share. When it’s over\, you’ll have some new tools and a boosted sense of confidence so you can get back to your stories and make your dialogue really…talk.

SUMMARY:Chris Lynch\, author of Walkin' the Dog\, in conversation with Sara Farizan
DESCRIPTION:Porter Square Books welcomes Chris Lynch (WFYP\, MFA Writing Faculty) for the release of Walkin’ the Dog! Author Sara Farizan (WFYP\, January 2012) will join Lynch in conversation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA boy learns how to be a friend from man’s best friend in this funny and moving middle grade novel about humans being able to change and dogs changing us from acclaimed author Chris Lynch. In a family of strong personalities with very strong points of view\, Louis is what his mother lovingly calls “the inactivist\,” someone who’d rather kick back than stand out. He only hopes he can stay under the radar when he starts high school in the fall\, his first experience with public school after years of homeschooling. But when a favor for a neighbor and his stinky canine companion unexpectedly turns into a bustling dog-walking business\, Louis finds himself meeting an unprecedented number of new friends—both human and canine. Agatha\, a quippy and cagey girl his age always seems to be telling two truths and a lie. Cyrus\, a few years his senior\, promises he’s going to show Louis how to be a better person\, whether Louis wants him to or not. And then there are the dogs: misbehaving border terriers\, the four (possible stolen) sausage dogs\, the rest of Louis’s charges\, and a mysterious white beast who appears at a certain spot at the edge of the woods.Dogs and human alike all seem to have something they want to teach Louis\, including his menacing older brother who keeps turning up everywhere. But is Louis ready to learn the lesson he needs most: how to stop being a lone wolf and be part of a pack? \n\n\n\nChris Lynch is the award–winning author of several highly acclaimed young adult novels\, including Printz Honor Book Freewill\, Iceman\, Gypsy Davey\, and Shadow Boxer—all ALA Best Books for Young Adults—as well as Killing Time in Crystal City\, Little Blue Lies\, Pieces\, Kill Switch\, Angry Young Man\, and Inexcusable\, which was a National Book Award finalist and the recipient of six starred reviews. Chris is the author of middle grade novel Walkin’ the Dog. He holds an MA from the writing program at Emerson College. He teaches in the creative writing MFA program at Lesley University. He lives in Boston and in Scotland. \n\n\n\nSara Farizan is an Iranian American writer\, avid culture vulture\, and ardent basketball fan who was born in and lives near Boston. The award-winning author of If You Could Be Mine\, Here to Stay\, and Dead Flip\, she has an MFA from Lesley University and a BA in film and media studies from American University.

SUMMARY:Chris Lynch presents Walkin' the Dog in conversation with Michael Mercurio
DESCRIPTION:Join Chris Lynch (WFYP\, MFA Writing Faculty) in conversation with Michael Mercurio (Poetry\, January 2017) as they discuss Chris’s new middle grade book\, Walkin’ the Dog at Broadside Bookshop. \n\n\n\nIn this charming middle-grade novel\, Louis\, a bit of an introvert in a family of assertive personalities\, has  been home-schooled up until now\, but is about to start high school in the fall. As he interacts with all these new influences\, Louis begins to re-think being a lone wolf. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Lynch is the award–winning author of several highly acclaimed young adult novels\, including Printz Honor Book Freewill\, Iceman\, Gypsy Davy\, and Shadow Boxer—all ALA Best Books for Young Adults—as well as Killing Time in Crystal City\, Little Blue Lies\, Pieces\, Kill Switch\, Angry Young Man\, and Inexcusable\, which was a National Book Award finalist and the recipient of six starred reviews. He holds an MA from the writing program at Emerson College. He teaches in the creative writing MFA program at Lesley University. He lives in Boston and in Scotland. \n\n\n\nMichael Mercurio  lives and writes in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts. He is the Director of Community Engagement for the Faraday Publishing Company\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering discourse of enduring value rooted in the work and experiences of the global majority\, and he also serves as a member of the steering committee for the Tell It Slant Poetry Festival\, held each September at Emily Dickinson’s house.

SUMMARY:Lyz Lenz presents This American Ex-Wife
DESCRIPTION:Join Lyz Lenz (Fiction\, June 2011) at Magers & Quinn Booksellers as she presents This American Ex-Wife: How I Ended My Marriage and Started My Life in conversation with Dara Moskowitz Grumdahl. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStudies show that nearly 70 percent of divorces are initiated by women—women who are tired\, fed up\, exhausted\, and unhappy. We’ve all seen how the media portrays divorcées: sad\, lonely\, drowning their sorrows in a bottle of wine. Lyz Lenz is one such woman whose life fell apart after she reached a breaking point in her twelve-year marriage. But she refused to take part in that tired narrative and decided to flip the script on divorce. \n\n\n\nIn this exuberant and unapologetic book\, Lenz makes an argument for the advantages of getting divorced\, framing it as a practical and effective solution for women to take back the power they are owed. Weaving reportage with sociological research and literature with popular culture along with personal stories of coming together and breaking up\, Lenz creates a kaleidoscopic and poignant portrait of American marriage today. She argues that the mechanisms of American power\, justice\, love\, and gender equality remain deeply flawed\, and that marriage\, like any other cultural institution\, is due for a reckoning. A raucous argument for acceptance\, solidarity\, and collective female refusal\, This American Ex-Wife takes readers on a riveting ride—while pointing us all toward a life that is a little more free. \n\n\n\nMasks are required for this event. \n\n\n\nLyz Lenz is a journalist and the author of God Land and Belabored. She has written for Insider\, The New York Times\, Marie Claire\, and The Washington Post. Lenz also writes the newsletter Men Yell at Me about the intersection of politics and personhood in red-state America. She lives in Iowa with her two kids. \n\n\n\nDara Moskowitz Grumdahl is one of the most awarded magazine writers in the country\, with six James Beard Award wins (and 15 nominations)-the so-called Oscars of food world-and another 6 CRMAs\, known as the Pulitzers of magazines. She grew up in New York City\, little aware of her destiny: to write about the quirks and passions\, the foods and cocktails\, the people and places of Minnesota. She started her work life as a 13-year-old restaurant dishwasher and\, after coming to Minnesota to attend Carleton College\, became City Pages’ restaurant critic in 1997. Since then she has worked as a staff writer\, columnist\, and critic at Mpls.St.Paul Magazine\, Delta Sky\, Minnesota Monthly\, Gourmet\, Saveur\, Food & Wine\, Experience Life\, Bon Appétit\, and other publications. For eight years she hosted a radio show on WCCO called “Off the Menu\,” and she is a regular guest on Minnesota Public Radio. She lives in south Minneapolis with a dog the size of a cat\, a cat the size of a cat\, and two children who are much bigger than cats and want to be left out of it. She would like everyone to know that Minneapolis is one of the best places in the world\, as long as you have a lot of pairs of boots and love snow\, which she does.

SUMMARY:Project Management for Poets and Writers\, with Michael Mercurio
DESCRIPTION:Any project can be daunting at the start. Some projects are still daunting in the middle\, especially when they have a lot of moving parts — or shifting scenes! So how do you make sure that your writing stays on track towards your goal? Figuring out a project management plan can set you up for success and can make even the biggest projects seem less unwieldy and intimidating. This workshop will walk you through the process of setting “SMART” goals (Specific\, Measurable\, Achievable\, Relevant\, and Time-bound)\, “chunking out” your project into manageable pieces\, setting a realistic timeline\, and sustaining all of this work with the development of good habits. You’ll also look at some fantastic project management tools\, both analog and digital\, that you may choose to use in support of your project. Workshop attendees should be prepared to talk about a project they’re finding difficult to begin or one already in process that they need help organizing and managing.  In-person/Hybrid. \n\n\n\nMichael Mercurio (Poetry\, January 2017) lives and writes in the Pioneer Valley\, where he serves on the steering committee for the Tell It Slant Poetry Festival (formerly Amherst Poetry Festival) and is the associate editor of the Naugatuck River Review. A graduate of the Lesley University low-res MFA program\, his poetry has been published in Rust + Moth\, Crab Creek Review\, and The Indianapolis Review\, and is forthcoming in Sugar House Review and Palette Poetry. Michael also has had critical reviews published in The Lily Poetry Review. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will also be available for online participants.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Shari Caplan - Exhibitionist
DESCRIPTION:In Exhibitionist by Shari Caplan (Poetry\, June 2014)\, the reader is invited to explore poems as installation; in this museum\, the personal and the persona poem variously expose and mask aspects of the speaker as she probes her bisexuality\, her evolution into motherhood\, and how our relationships to art and desire are linked. Drawing from painting\, performance art\, theater\, and literature\, these poems\, and the collages which serve as landing spots\, deal thematically with the body treated as object versus whole human\, how our gaze shapes our lives through desire\, and how much an artist is expected to expose and expunge of themselves for the audience’s catharsis. \n\n\n\n“Enthralled by the luscious-articulate\, along with the minds of these poems we plunge. Shari Caplan’s Exhibitionist uplifts my own personal belief that mind and body together conduct themselves as sensuous parallels. These are poems that defy boundaries\, delight in upending all those numbing norms\, and show us that the paths to pleasure\, intellectual and corporeal\, meet at the juncture of poetic sublime. I thank Caplan for taking me there and for bringing me back.”– Cate Marvin\, author of Event Horizon and Oracle \n\n\n\nShari Caplan (she/her) is a poet\, actor\, and event producer with a passion for enlivening our collective imaginative potential. She’s the author of “Exhibitionist” (Lily Poetry Review Books\, Paul Nemser Prize Winner 2024)\, “The Red Shoes; a Phantasmagoric Ballet on Paper\,” (Lambhouse Books\, 2023)\, and “Advice from a Siren” (Dancing Girl Press\, 2016). A wearer of many tophats\, she has produced and performed in “The Poetry Circus\,” “The Fairy Tale Poetry Walking Tour\,” and other cross-pollinations\, including the Boston chapter of The Poetry Brothel\, an international immersive cabaret series (founded by The Poetry Society of New York). Shari’s work has appeared in Gulf Coast\, Painted Bride Quarterly\, Sinister Wisdom\, Grimoire\, Angime\, Drunk Monkeys\, and others and has earned her a scholarship to The Home School in Hudson\, a fellowship to The Vermont Studio Center\, as well as nominations for a Bettering American Poetry Award\, a Pushcart Prize\, and a Rhylsing Award. She graduated with an MFA from Lesley University in 2014. Find her work\, workshops\, monthly love letter to creativity\, and upcoming events at ShariCaplan.com.

SUMMARY:Zoom Webinar: The Modern Art of War - Hunter Liguore
DESCRIPTION:Sun Tzu’s Art of War has been read mostly as a book of war strategies that teaches us how to beat our opponents on the battlefield. The Modern Art of War presents a new interpretation: it isn’t about conquering your enemies\, devising strategies to overtake armies\, or getting ahead against your competitors. Instead\, the real art of war is the fight to control your mind and the thoughts that rule it. \n\n\n\nWhat if Sun Tzu wasn’t a general at all\, but a spiritual advisor\, and that the Art of War was written not for a king\, but for the people? \n\n\n\nJoin this webinar and share in Hunter Liguore’s (Fiction/WFYP\, 2012) insights and guidance to the deeper meaning of the Art of War\, from how to understand one’s own nature to strategies for drawing on our own wholehearted will and perceiving the inherent instability in all things. \n\n\n\nThe book contains over 150 reflection questions that prompt the reader to understand the text and guide them in their self-development journey\, from ‘If you can change one idea about yourself to step into a new future\, what would it be?’ to ‘Based on Sun Tzu’s teachings\, what strategies can you incorporate into your daily activity or practice that would assist you in working through frustration or anger\, without being harsh with yourself?’ \n\n\n\nLearn how to “conquer” or still the mind in order to reveal your own hidden teacher and recognize that the root of conflict (or war) begins within.
