SUMMARY:AWP: In Praise of Legacy: Writers of Color and the Challenge of the Canon
DESCRIPTION:The word “canon” in literary studies was intended to refer to humanity’s greatest writings—those which all “educated” people should know. Thanks to the work of critics and scholars of color\, however\, we are now able to recognize the exclusions\, the silences\, and the gaps that exist in the traditional concept of the canon. The four poets/professors on this panel will read poems and discuss how to explore\, expand\, and explode the literary canon in one’s work and in the classroom. \n\n\n\nJoin Enzo Silon Surin (Poetry\, 2012)\, Nathan McClain\, Kenzie Allen\, Michael Mercurio (Poetry\, January 2017)\, Rita Banerjee for this panel at the 2024 AWP Conference in Kansas City.

SUMMARY:You Were Born a Poem: a Master Craft Class by Enzo Silon Surin (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:There are a number of things that inform who we are as individuals\, which consequently inform the way we process and reflect the world we inhabit. These same factors are at play in the decisions we make as writers and they have a profound effect on how\, when\, and where we make use of the necessary language to convey our experiences. As such\, the Poet as “literary device” is not a stretch by any means.  \n\n\n\nThis master craft class will explore what it means to be a poem and how the way we move through the world can have an impact on what we choose to write about. You will also discuss how this impacts the way you craft a poem\, from its shape and sounds to its rhythm and movements. \n\n\n\nNB: This class will be taught on Zoom and will be capped at 15 students. Registrants will receive the Zoom link to the email address they use to register. Please email misty@writerscenter.org with any questions. \n\n\n\nAll HVWC scholarship applications will be available on Dec 1 and will be due on Dec 15 for all winter/spring 2024 classes. \n\n\n\nEnzo Silon Surin (Poetry\, 2012) is a Haitian-born\, award-winning poet\, educator\, speaker\, publisher and social advocate. He is the author of four collections of poetry\, including American Scapegoat (Black Lawrence Press\, May 2023)\, and When My Body Was A Clenched Fist (2020)\, winner of the 21st Annual Massachusetts Book Awards for Poetry.

Author Sara Farizan (WFYP\, January 2012) will join Lynch in conversation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA boy learns how to be a friend from man’s best friend in this funny and moving middle grade novel about humans being able to change and dogs changing us from acclaimed author Chris Lynch. In a family of strong personalities with very strong points of view\, Louis is what his mother lovingly calls “the inactivist\,” someone who’d rather kick back than stand out. He only hopes he can stay under the radar when he starts high school in the fall\, his first experience with public school after years of homeschooling. But when a favor for a neighbor and his stinky canine companion unexpectedly turns into a bustling dog-walking business\, Louis finds himself meeting an unprecedented number of new friends—both human and canine. Agatha\, a quippy and cagey girl his age always seems to be telling two truths and a lie. Cyrus\, a few years his senior\, promises he’s going to show Louis how to be a better person\, whether Louis wants him to or not. And then there are the dogs: misbehaving border terriers\, the four (possible stolen) sausage dogs\, the rest of Louis’s charges\, and a mysterious white beast who appears at a certain spot at the edge of the woods.Dogs and human alike all seem to have something they want to teach Louis\, including his menacing older brother who keeps turning up everywhere. But is Louis ready to learn the lesson he needs most: how to stop being a lone wolf and be part of a pack? \n\n\n\nChris Lynch is the award–winning author of several highly acclaimed young adult novels\, including Printz Honor Book Freewill\, Iceman\, Gypsy Davey\, and Shadow Boxer—all ALA Best Books for Young Adults—as well as Killing Time in Crystal City\, Little Blue Lies\, Pieces\, Kill Switch\, Angry Young Man\, and Inexcusable\, which was a National Book Award finalist and the recipient of six starred reviews. SUMMARY:Lyz Lenz presents This American Ex-Wife
DESCRIPTION:Join Lyz Lenz (Fiction\, June 2011) at Magers & Quinn Booksellers as she presents This American Ex-Wife: How I Ended My Marriage and Started My Life in conversation with Dara Moskowitz Grumdahl. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStudies show that nearly 70 percent of divorces are initiated by women—women who are tired\, fed up\, exhausted\, and unhappy. We’ve all seen how the media portrays divorcées: sad\, lonely\, drowning their sorrows in a bottle of wine. Lyz Lenz is one such woman whose life fell apart after she reached a breaking point in her twelve-year marriage. But she refused to take part in that tired narrative and decided to flip the script on divorce. \n\n\n\nIn this exuberant and unapologetic book\, Lenz makes an argument for the advantages of getting divorced\, framing it as a practical and effective solution for women to take back the power they are owed. Weaving reportage with sociological research and literature with popular culture along with personal stories of coming together and breaking up\, Lenz creates a kaleidoscopic and poignant portrait of American marriage today. She argues that the mechanisms of American power\, justice\, love\, and gender equality remain deeply flawed\, and that marriage\, like any other cultural institution\, is due for a reckoning. A raucous argument for acceptance\, solidarity\, and collective female refusal\, This American Ex-Wife takes readers on a riveting ride—while pointing us all toward a life that is a little more free. \n\n\n\nMasks are required for this event. \n\n\n\nLyz Lenz is a journalist and the author of God Land and Belabored. She has written for Insider\, The New York Times\, Marie Claire\, and The Washington Post. Lenz also writes the newsletter Men Yell at Me about the intersection of politics and personhood in red-state America. She lives in Iowa with her two kids. \n\n\n\nDara Moskowitz Grumdahl is one of the most awarded magazine writers in the country\, with six James Beard Award wins (and 15 nominations)-the so-called Oscars of food world-and another 6 CRMAs\, known as the Pulitzers of magazines. She grew up in New York City\, little aware of her destiny: to write about the quirks and passions\, the foods and cocktails\, the people and places of Minnesota. She started her work life as a 13-year-old restaurant dishwasher and\, after coming to Minnesota to attend Carleton College\, became City Pages’ restaurant critic in 1997. Since then she has worked as a staff writer\, columnist\, and critic at Mpls.St.Paul Magazine\, Delta Sky\, Minnesota Monthly\, Gourmet\, Saveur\, Food & Wine\, Experience Life\, Bon Appétit\, and other publications. For eight years she hosted a radio show on WCCO called “Off the Menu\,” and she is a regular guest on Minnesota Public Radio. SUMMARY:Project Management for Poets and Writers\, with Michael Mercurio
DESCRIPTION:Any project can be daunting at the start. Some projects are still daunting in the middle\, especially when they have a lot of moving parts — or shifting scenes! So how do you make sure that your writing stays on track towards your goal? Figuring out a project management plan can set you up for success and can make even the biggest projects seem less unwieldy and intimidating. This workshop will walk you through the process of setting “SMART” goals (Specific\, Measurable\, Achievable\, Relevant\, and Time-bound)\, “chunking out” your project into manageable pieces\, setting a realistic timeline\, and sustaining all of this work with the development of good habits. You’ll also look at some fantastic project management tools\, both analog and digital\, that you may choose to use in support of your project. Workshop attendees should be prepared to talk about a project they’re finding difficult to begin or one already in process that they need help organizing and managing.  In-person/Hybrid. \n\n\n\nMichael Mercurio (Poetry\, January 2017) lives and writes in the Pioneer Valley\, where he serves on the steering committee for the Tell It Slant Poetry Festival (formerly Amherst Poetry Festival) and is the associate editor of the Naugatuck River Review. A graduate of the Lesley University low-res MFA program\, his poetry has been published in Rust + Moth\, Crab Creek Review\, and The Indianapolis Review\, and is forthcoming in Sugar House Review and Palette Poetry. Michael also has had critical reviews published in The Lily Poetry Review. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will also be available for online participants.
