SUMMARY:Jasminne Paulino launches "The Extraordinary Orbit of Alex Ramirez" with Lofty Pigeon Books
DESCRIPTION:Join Lofty Pigeon Books for the launch of The Extraordinary Orbit of Alex Ramirez\, Jasminne Paulino’s (WFYP\, June 2023) powerful debut novel in verse about a neurodivergent seventh grader who dreams of traveling to the stars one day. \n\n\n\nJasminne will be joined by New York Times–bestselling children’s author Michelle Knudsen (WFYP\, MFA Writing Faculty) for a reading\, conversation\, signing\, and reception. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSeventh grader Alex’s favorite things to do are watching YouTube videos of rocket launches with his Papi and spending hours on the NASA website reading about astronauts and planets. He even dreams of going to space one day himself\, and knows he’ll have to study hard in order to get there. \n\n\n\nBut Alex is in his grade’s SC (self-contained) classroom\, which means doing the same dull worksheets every day and reading books his sister read back in the third grade. Worst of all\, being in SC means nobody thinks he’s ready to join Ms. Rosef’s mainstream science class—the class Alex knows will be the first step on his path to NASA. \n\n\n\nWhen his teacher says “not yet” for the millionth time\, Alex decides it’s time to make a change. Now he’s ready to try everything he can to get the people in his life—his teachers\, his parents\, and the kids at school—to understand that he\, Alex Ramirez\, is capable of the extraordinary.

SUMMARY:Author Talk & Book Signing with Cindy House
DESCRIPTION:Visit Obodo Serendipity Books to see Cindy House (Fiction\, June 2017) in conversation with Zach Miko about her memoir\, Mother Noise. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn the opening of this “unexpectedly uplifting…masterfully crafted memoir” (Shelf Awareness\, starred review) Cindy\, twenty years into recovery after a heroin addiction\, grapples with how to tell her nine-year-old son about her past. She wants him to learn this history from her\, not anyone else; but she worries about the effect this truth may have on him. Told in essays and graphic narrative shorts\, Mother Noise is a stunning memoir that delves deep into our responsibilities as parents while celebrating the moments of grace and generosity that mark a true friendship—in this case\, her benefactor and champion through the years\, David Sedaris. \n\n\n\nThis is a powerful memoir about addiction\, motherhood\, and Cindy’s ongoing effort to reconcile the two. Are we required to share with our children the painful details of our past\, or do we owe them protection from the harsh truth of who we were before?

SUMMARY:Still Healing - Author Event with Rosalind Kaplan
DESCRIPTION:Visit Moore Books for drinks\, snacks\, and conversation with Rosalind Kaplan (Nonfiction\, June 2020) about her memoir in essays\, Still Healing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe American view of doctors vacillates between seeing them as heroes with hearts of gold and nerves of steel and disparaging them as arrogant\, callous\, and careless. The truth lies between: Doctors are human beings with professional training that\, at best\, allows them to heal people and\, at worst\, to harm or even hasten death. Still Healing\, a memoir in essays\, explores the complicated realm of medical training\, practice\, and culture. With vulnerability and humor\, it gives a glimpse into the world of a doctor and an honest and sometimes searing view of our healthcare system.

SUMMARY:The Sonnet: From Sidney to Seuss Poetry Workshop with Michael Mercurio
DESCRIPTION:COURSE DESCRIPTION: Originating in Sicily in the 13th Century\, the sonnet (from the Italian sonetto\, “little song”) is a beloved form for English-language poets\, beginning in the 16th Century with Sir Phillip Sidney. In the 500 years that have followed\, the sonnet has been used — and changed — by poets to think through big questions about existence\, love\, and morality. \n\n\n\nOver the 8 weeks of this survey course\, we will read through chronological examples of the sonnet to consider shifts in style over time. We will also cover the formal elements of the sonnet (e.g.\, prosody\, rhyme scheme) to provide students with a working basic understanding of these elements. \n\n\n\nEach week\, students enrolled in the class will be provided with a packet of sonnets to be covered during each session. Students will also be asked to write a sonnet each week in the style of one of the sample poets and will have the opportunity to share it and discuss the experience of writing in that style.

SUMMARY:Cambridge Common Writers Presents: moon moon by July Westhale\, Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual celebration of July Westhale’s (Poetry\, June 2013) latest poetry collection\, moon moon! Registration required. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA moon’s moon may or may not be the astronomically accurate descriptor of a moon that orbits another moon. Whether rooted in logic or merely a cosmically precise description of “space trash”\, moon moon is a collection that observes worlds: above\, below\, and inside of. Rife with chaotic eco grief\, undercut with dark humor and strangeness. (Whitney Houston as two oracles to the moon of the moon\, humans as gods as humans again.) It takes us from the world to the moon\, to the moon of the moon\, and back again–sometimes scientifically\, often experientially\, and always obsessively. It is a collection for anyone who holds curiosity\, exploration\, and the existentialism of climate change simultaneously. It is for the truest astronauts among us.

SUMMARY:Poet Swap: Not the Poetry Reading You’re Used To with Kate Kearns\, Mike Bove and David Stankiewicz
DESCRIPTION:Kate Kearns (Poetry\, June 2008)\, Mike Bove and David Stankiewicz are shaking up the usual poetry reading format. \n\n\n\nWhy? Because at a normal reading\, there’s surprise and discovery for the audience\, but there’s none for the poet. In a poet swap\, the poet gets to see their own work in a new and likely uncomfortable way\, and the audience gets the added bonus of watching them squirm. \n\n\n\nWhat’s a poet swap? It’s like a body swap for a body of work. A trust fall. A torture wheel. Instead of presenting their own writing\, each reader will present one of the other poets’ work\, which they’ve had time to read and prepare. \n\n\n\nAt this event\, Kate Kearns will present Mike Bove’s poetry\, Mike will present David’s\, and David will present Kate’s. The poet whose work is being read has no idea what poems the reader has chosen\, what order they’re in\, or what context will come with them. The only rule is all poems must be read word for word\, true to the original. \n\n\n\nKate Kearns is the author of You Are Ruining My Loneliness (Littoral Books\, 2023) and How to Love an Introvert (Finishing Line Press\, 2015). Kate’s work has appeared in Rustica\, the Maine Sunday Telegram\, Salamander\, Peregrine\, Sugar House Review and elsewhere. Kate was a finalist for the Charles Simic Memorial Prize and the 2024 Maine Postmark Competition. She earned her MFA from Lesley University. Learn more at www.katekearns.com. \n\n\n\nMike Bove is a prize-winning author of four books of poetry. His poems have appeared in Rattle\, Southern Humanities Review\, Tar River Poetry\, Rust & Moth\, and many others. He served as a 2024 Writer-in-Residence at Acadia National Park and is Associate Editor for Hole in the Head Review. Mike lives with his family in Portland\, Maine where he was born and raised. www.mikebove.com \n\n\n\nDavid Stankiewicz is the author of two poetry books: Night Garden (Deerbrook Editions 2024) and My First Beatrice (Moon Pie Press 2013). A graduate of the Stonecoast MFA program\, David is a professor of English at Southern Maine Community College. He lives in Cape Elizabeth with his family.

SUMMARY:CCW Presents: To Die Is Different Than Supposed by Alissa Butterworth\, Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual celebration of Alissa Butterworth’s (Fiction\, June 2012) debut novel\, To Die Is Different Than Supposed! Registration required. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe died by bicycle\, by a breakfast gone bad\, by a fist\, a broken promise\, a rowboat\, letters no one else was supposed to see.Twenty years ago\, the Gable family was nearly perfect—five siblings growing up in an old farmhouse in Pennsylvania with supposedly loving parents. But when a series of devastating events rocks the family—a house fire\, the death of their young brother\, infidelity\, and betrayal—the siblings are left shattered and lost.Jackson is the oldest\, the distant wanderer. Lex is trapped on the other side\, desperately trying to communicate. Adrian is on the verge of a breakdown. Ella is haunted\, finding comfort in a familiar ghost. Remy is the embittered “good” son. And Calvin is the youngest\, the half-brother trying to make sense of inherited pain. When the estranged siblings come together for their father’s funeral\, they must reckon with his legacy of abuse and abandonment\, and with the secrets they kept from each other for so long. Will Jackson find it in himself to tell the horrific story the family most needs to hear? Or will they all be forever trapped by their complicated pasts\, unable to move into a more hopeful and united future?

SUMMARY:Presentation and Signing: Where Are You\, Echo Blue? by Hayley Krishcher
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to a presentation and signing at Asbury Book Cooperative with Hayley Krischer (Fiction\, June 2009) presenting her newest title\, WHERE ARE YOU\, ECHO BLUE? \n\n\n\nAward-winning journalist and YA novelist Hayley Krischer makes her adult novel debut with WHERE ARE YOU\, ECHO BLUE? (Dutton; on sale July 16\, 2024)\, a whirlwind tale of celebrity\, fandom\, and the price of ambition. The novel follows both Goldie Klein\, a scrappy young journalist trying to make it in the New York magazine world\, and the object of her admiration\, Echo Blue\, the most famous child star of thenineties who goes missing on the eve of the millennium. When Echo disappears ahead of a highly publicized New Year’s Eve television appearance\, most people assume it’s because she’s gotten herself into trouble. After all\, between strained family relationships\, a high-profile relationship with a Hollywood “bad boy\,” and a stint in rehab\, she’s no stranger to drama. But Goldie is Echo’s biggest fan and knows there must be more to the story. Determined to make this investigation her big media break\, she sets off for L.A. in search of Echo—and the truth. \n\n\n\nGoldie\, and readers\, fall deep into Echo’s complicated past\, following her rise from plucky child star to ingenue to rebel. The more Goldie unearths\, the more she questions her own complicity in the young star’s downfall\, but it becomes impossible to pull herself away. Alternating perspectives between the two women until their twin journeys collide\, WHERE ARE YOU\, ECHO BLUE? is a sharp interrogation of celebrity culture\, the thin line between admiration and obsession\, and what it means to tell other peoples’ stories. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHayley Krischer has earned critical acclaim for her moving YA novels\, Something Happened to AliGreenleaf and The Falling Girls. She also spent two decades as a journalist\, examining culture and interviewing celebrities—including Gabrielle Union\, Celine Dion\, and former child star Tatum O’Neal—for publications like the New York Times\, Marie Claire\, and the Atlantic.

SUMMARY:Music Into Written Word with Erin Cecilia Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Erin Cecilia Thomas (Jan ’23\, Fiction) will be instructing the seminar\, ‘Music Into Written Word.’ \n\n\n\nHow can writers translate the intangible experience of listening to or performing music into written words? This seminar will look at the work of writers who use music in their narratives and the craft elements they employ\, such as syntax\, sentence structure\, metaphor\, rhythm\, and tone. We will look at examples of how writing styles vary according to the musical genre being described\, and how other elements such as character and setting affect how the reader interprets a scene that revolves around music. Samples of music will be played followed by text that describes the music to show how these techniques are applied. We will listen to a piece of music and free-write\, and volunteers can present their writing for discussion.
