SUMMARY:Writing by Ear: Incorporating the Poetic\, with Michael Mercurio
DESCRIPTION:Every writer—no matter how accomplished they may be—feels the pressure of finding the right words to invigorate their manuscripts\, to tell stories that resonate with readers and that linger for a long time. In this half-day workshop\, writers will explore how the origins of words we use and the sounds of them can enhance their writing across any and all genres. Incorporating these poetic sensibilities into your work can help to create meaning you didn’t know was there and to get your work to stand out when it crosses an editor’s desk. This workshop will include a brief history lesson on the peculiarities of the English language\, an opportunity to discuss some tried-and-true strategies for using words as springboards for inspiration\, and plenty of time to write.

SUMMARY:Books are Magic - Candice Iloh: Every Body Looking w/ Jason Reynolds
DESCRIPTION:Every Body Looking is a novel of a young woman’s struggle to carve a place for herself in a world of deeply conflicting messages. Told entirely in verse\, Ada’s story encompasses her earliest memories as a child\, including her abuse at the hands of a young cousin\, her mother’s rejection and descent into addiction\, and her father’s attempts to create a home for his American daughter more like the one he knew in Nigeria. The present-tense of the book is Ada’s first year at a Historically Black College\, where she must finally confront the fundamental conflict between who her family says she should be and what her body tells her she must be. \n\n\n\nCandice Iloh (WFYP\, June 2017) is a first generation Nigerian-American writer\, teaching artist\, and youth educator. She has performed her work around the country\, most notably at Nuyorican Poets Café in New York City\, the Women in Poetry & Hip Hop celebration at the Reginald F. SUMMARY:OREGON ONLINE: DG Footlights™ feat. Bartow by Greg Berman
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Alissa Jessup. \n\n\n\nFeaturing: Bobby Bermea\, Thea Constantine\, Michelle Matlock\, Duane Minard\, Joshua Weinstein\, & Barbie Wu. \n\n\n\nParalyzed after a major stroke\, Oregonian Contemporary artist\, Rick Bartow and a young med student attempt their own form of therapy by entering Bartow’s art as expressions of prior traumas\, lost indigenous heritage\, abstract animal paintings\, sculptures\, masks\, and lost songs. This is a theatrical exploration of recovery adapted from Rick Bartow’s retrospective and accompanying book Things You Know But Cannot Explain. \n\n\n\nDG Footlights™ is a program\, created and moderated by the Dramatists Guild\, that connects dramatists with free space in which to hold a public reading of a new work that is currently in development. This initiative operates on a space-grant model: a representative from the Guild will arrange for a venue to donate space during allocated dates and times\, and will ensure that the space is available for dramatists to use to present a self-produced reading to the public\, with an optional feedback session following the reading. Attendance is always free and open to all.
