RSVP Required. \n\n\n\nShamar Hill\, a Black and Jewish writer\, is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships\, including from the New York Foundation for the Arts\, Cave Canem\, and the Fine Arts Work Center. He has been published in the American Poetry Review\, the Missouri Review\, Washington Square Review\, and Poetry Northwest\, among others. He is working on his memoir\, In Defiance of All True Things\, and a poetry collection\, Photographs of an Imagined Childhood. \n\n\n\nEnzo Silon Surin (Poetry\, 2012) is a Haitian-born award-winning poet\, author\, educator\, speaker\, publisher and social advocate. He has taught\, performed\, and lectured at schools\, universities\, festivals and serves as a keynote speaker on topics such as social justice\, mental health reform\, the immigrant experience\, and racial disparities. He is the author of four collections of poetry\, including American Scapegoat (Black Lawrence Press\, 2023) and When My Body Was A Clinched Fist (2020)\, winner of the 21st Annual Massachusetts Book Awards. He is also Publisher at Central Square Press and Founder/Executive Director at the Faraday Publishing Company\, a nonprofit literary services and social advocacy organization. \n\n\n\nMartha Collins recently published her eleventh collection of poetry\, Casualty Reports (Pittsburgh\, 2022)\, and her fifth volume of co-translated Vietnamese poetry\, Dreaming the Mountain\, poems by Tue Sy (Milkweed\, 2023). Her tenth book of poems\, Because What Else Could I Do (Pittsburgh\, 2019)\, won the Poetry Society of America’s William Carlos Williams Award; earlier books\, which have won several awards\, include three focusing on race and racism (Admit One: An American Scrapbook\, White Papers\, Blue Front). Collins founded the U.Mass. Boston creative writing program and served for ten years as Pauline Delaney Professor of Creative Writing at Oberlin.

DESCRIPTION:Sometimes the hardest stories to tell are the ones that most need to be told. This class will focus on creating a safe space and a practice of self-care as you write\, in prose or poetry\, with the intent to heal and release. Drawing from the psychological insights of Judith Hermann\, Natalie Goldberg\, and Gabor Mate\, you will discuss the ways the body holds onto trauma and how expressing ourselves through writing can help us heal. Sharing your writing with the group is encouraged but not required. \n\n\n\nThis class will meet in-person at CCAE on Wednesdays for 8 sessions. \n\n\n\nAmy Mevorach (Nonfiction January 2023) has published essays and fiction in The New York Times Modern Love column\, Boulevard Magazine\, CALYX Journal\, Glimmer Train Stories\, and other publications. Her award-winning poem “Eight” has been screened at film festivals in L.A. and Toronto\, and is available to watch on her website amymevorach.com. Dina Friedman (Fiction\, January 2016) presents her new collection\, Immigrants. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\nWith sensitivity and wit\, Friedman creates a tableau of characters\, scenery\, sounds\, smells\, and tastes as varied as those who have claimed or seek to claim a home within our borders. \n\n\n\nIn this compelling collection of stories\, we find immigrants everywhere: in the poignant and doomed relationships between the documented and undocumented; in a squalid encampment by the Rio Grande\, where a young mother sends her daughter over the bridge to the U.S. alone; in multicultural New York\, where an old woman obsessed with anti-Semitism during the Black Death faces a moral dilemma when her housekeeper asks to borrow money to bail out her undocumented brother; and in a New England home\, where bats in the attic are threatening the last vestiges of stability for a divorced and desperate middle-aged white woman and her twenty-something Chinese American tenant. \n\n\n\nThese stories explore the deep ambiguities in how we perceive each other. DESCRIPTION:(UN)HOUSED is a story about a single mother\, Elianie\, and her recent college graduate daughter\, Skylar\, who has moved back home. As Skylar tries to navigate the world of adulthood\, she and her mother learn that their two-bedroom home of ten years has been put up for sale by their landlord. When a new landlord purchases the home and allows for Elianie and Skylar to remain as tenants\, they believe all is well until a series of incidents put their housing in jeopardy. Tickets are free with an option for donation.

DESCRIPTION:There are a number of things that inform who we are as individuals\, which consequently inform the way we process and reflect the world we inhabit. These same factors are at play in the decisions we make as writers and they have a profound effect on how\, when\, and where we make use of the necessary language to convey our experiences. As such\, the Poet as “literary device” is not a stretch by any means.  \n\n\n\nThis master craft class will explore what it means to be a poem and how the way we move through the world can have an impact on what we choose to write about. You will also discuss how this impacts the way you craft a poem\, from its shape and sounds to its rhythm and movements. \n\n\n\nNB: This class will be taught on Zoom and will be capped at 15 students. DESCRIPTION:Join Brookline Booksmith for an evening of poetry with Eileen Cleary (Poetry\, June 2016)\, Anne Pluto\, Linda Carney-Goodrich\, & Gloria Monaghan. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of Third Thursdays Poetry\, a monthly reading series at Brookline Booksmith. \n\n\n\nEileen Cleary (she/her) is the author of Wild Pack of the Living (Nixes Mate\, 2024)\, 2 a.m. with Keats (Nixes Mate\, 2021) and Child Ward of the Commonwealth (Main Street Rag Press\, 2019)\, which received an honorable mention for the Sheila Margaret Motton Book Prize. She co-edited the anthology ‘ Voices Amidst the Virus’ which was the featured text at the 2021 MSU Filmetry Festival. Cleary founded and edits the Lily Poetry Review and Lily Poetry Review Books\, and curates the Lily Poetry Salon. A multi-pushcart nominee\, her work is published widely in journals and anthologies. \n\n\n\nAnne Elezabeth Pluto grew up in Brooklyn\, NY before it was cool. She is professor of Literature and Theatre at Lesley University in Cambridge\, MA where she is the artistic director of the Oxford Street Players. She is an alumna of Shakespeare & Company and was a. member of the Worcester Shakespeare Company from 2011 – 2016. She was a member of the Boston small press scene in the late 1980s and is one of the founders and editors at Nixes Mate Review/Nixes Mate Books. Her most recent publications are full length collections: The Deepest Part of Dark\, Unlikely Stories Press\, NOLA\, 2020 and How Many Miles to Babylon?\, Lily Poetry Review Books\, 2023. \n\n\n\nLinda Carney-Goodrich is a writer and teacher from Boston. Her work has appeared in journals such as spoKe10\, Lily Poetry Review\, The MacGuffin\, Nixes Mate Review\, Anti-Heroin Chic\, Literary Mama\, Muddy River Poetry Review\, Wordgathering Journal of Disability Poetry and Literature\, Gyroscope Review\, and City of Notions: An Anthology of Contemporary Boston Poems. Her work has been translated in Spanish and published in Columbia and Mexico. Several of her poems have been displayed on the walls at Boston City Hall as part of the Boston Mayor’s Poetry Program. Linda is the Poetry Coordinator for the Menino Art Center in Hyde Park. She also owns and operates Home Scholars of Boston\, through which she offers small classes\, private tutoring\, and educational consulting. Her one person shows include The Secret Childhood Diary of a Welfare Mother and My Life in Barbie. Dot Girl is her first collection of poetry. \n\n\n\nGloria Monaghan is a Professor at Wentworth University. She has published six collections of poetry. The most recent book\, Cormorant on the Strand\, was published by Lily Poetry Review in 2023. Her poems have appeared in Nixes Mate\, NPR\, Poem-a-Day\, Lily Poetry Review\, Mom Egg Review\, Quartet and River Heron among others. She has been nominated twice for the Pushcart Prize\, as well as the Massachusetts Book Award\, and the Griffin Prize. She recently completed a film on painter\, Nancy Ellen Craig\, which was accepted into the 2023 Provincetown Film Festival.

SUMMARY:Project Management for Poets and Writers\, with Michael Mercurio
DESCRIPTION:Any project can be daunting at the start. Some projects are still daunting in the middle\, especially when they have a lot of moving parts — or shifting scenes! So how do you make sure that your writing stays on track towards your goal? Figuring out a project management plan can set you up for success and can make even the biggest projects seem less unwieldy and intimidating. This workshop will walk you through the process of setting “SMART” goals (Specific\, Measurable\, Achievable\, Relevant\, and Time-bound)\, “chunking out” your project into manageable pieces\, setting a realistic timeline\, and sustaining all of this work with the development of good habits. You’ll also look at some fantastic project management tools\, both analog and digital\, that you may choose to use in support of your project. Workshop attendees should be prepared to talk about a project they’re finding difficult to begin or one already in process that they need help organizing and managing.  In-person/Hybrid. \n\n\n\nMichael Mercurio (Poetry\, January 2017) lives and writes in the Pioneer Valley\, where he serves on the steering committee for the Tell It Slant Poetry Festival (formerly Amherst Poetry Festival) and is the associate editor of the Naugatuck River Review. A graduate of the Lesley University low-res MFA program\, his poetry has been published in Rust + Moth\, Crab Creek Review\, and The Indianapolis Review\, and is forthcoming in Sugar House Review and Palette Poetry. Michael also has had critical reviews published in The Lily Poetry Review. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will also be available for online participants.
