SUMMARY:CCW Presents: To Die Is Different Than Supposed by Alissa Butterworth\, Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual celebration of Alissa Butterworth’s (Fiction\, June 2012) debut novel\, To Die Is Different Than Supposed! Registration required. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe died by bicycle\, by a breakfast gone bad\, by a fist\, a broken promise\, a rowboat\, letters no one else was supposed to see.Twenty years ago\, the Gable family was nearly perfect—five siblings growing up in an old farmhouse in Pennsylvania with supposedly loving parents. But when a series of devastating events rocks the family—a house fire\, the death of their young brother\, infidelity\, and betrayal—the siblings are left shattered and lost.Jackson is the oldest\, the distant wanderer. Lex is trapped on the other side\, desperately trying to communicate. Adrian is on the verge of a breakdown. Ella is haunted\, finding comfort in a familiar ghost. Remy is the embittered “good” son. And Calvin is the youngest\, the half-brother trying to make sense of inherited pain. When the estranged siblings come together for their father’s funeral\, they must reckon with his legacy of abuse and abandonment\, and with the secrets they kept from each other for so long. Will Jackson find it in himself to tell the horrific story the family most needs to hear? Or will they all be forever trapped by their complicated pasts\, unable to move into a more hopeful and united future?

SUMMARY:Presentation and Signing: Where Are You\, Echo Blue? by Hayley Krishcher
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to a presentation and signing at Asbury Book Cooperative with Hayley Krischer (Fiction\, June 2009) presenting her newest title\, WHERE ARE YOU\, ECHO BLUE? \n\n\n\nAward-winning journalist and YA novelist Hayley Krischer makes her adult novel debut with WHERE ARE YOU\, ECHO BLUE? (Dutton; on sale July 16\, 2024)\, a whirlwind tale of celebrity\, fandom\, and the price of ambition. The novel follows both Goldie Klein\, a scrappy young journalist trying to make it in the New York magazine world\, and the object of her admiration\, Echo Blue\, the most famous child star of thenineties who goes missing on the eve of the millennium. When Echo disappears ahead of a highly publicized New Year’s Eve television appearance\, most people assume it’s because she’s gotten herself into trouble. After all\, between strained family relationships\, a high-profile relationship with a Hollywood “bad boy\,” and a stint in rehab\, she’s no stranger to drama. But Goldie is Echo’s biggest fan and knows there must be more to the story. Determined to make this investigation her big media break\, she sets off for L.A. in search of Echo—and the truth. \n\n\n\nGoldie\, and readers\, fall deep into Echo’s complicated past\, following her rise from plucky child star to ingenue to rebel. The more Goldie unearths\, the more she questions her own complicity in the young star’s downfall\, but it becomes impossible to pull herself away. Alternating perspectives between the two women until their twin journeys collide\, WHERE ARE YOU\, ECHO BLUE? is a sharp interrogation of celebrity culture\, the thin line between admiration and obsession\, and what it means to tell other peoples’ stories. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHayley Krischer has earned critical acclaim for her moving YA novels\, Something Happened to AliGreenleaf and The Falling Girls. She also spent two decades as a journalist\, examining culture and interviewing celebrities—including Gabrielle Union\, Celine Dion\, and former child star Tatum O’Neal—for publications like the New York Times\, Marie Claire\, and the Atlantic.

SUMMARY:Music Into Written Word with Erin Cecilia Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Erin Cecilia Thomas (Jan ’23\, Fiction) will be instructing the seminar\, ‘Music Into Written Word.’ \n\n\n\nHow can writers translate the intangible experience of listening to or performing music into written words? This seminar will look at the work of writers who use music in their narratives and the craft elements they employ\, such as syntax\, sentence structure\, metaphor\, rhythm\, and tone. We will look at examples of how writing styles vary according to the musical genre being described\, and how other elements such as character and setting affect how the reader interprets a scene that revolves around music. Samples of music will be played followed by text that describes the music to show how these techniques are applied. We will listen to a piece of music and free-write\, and volunteers can present their writing for discussion.

SUMMARY:Around the World Book Signing with Jorge Armenteros
DESCRIPTION:Visit the English bookshop Librairie Masséna Around the World (58 Rue Gioffredo) in Nice\, France on Saturday 9th November from 5pm to 7pm when author Jorge Armenteros (Fiction\, June 2012) will be signing copies of his latest book – The Curvature of an Absence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt the edge of a vanishing sea and under the light of a fading sun\, two writers struggle to understand the sudden absence of affective and natural elements from their lives. As they seek a beautiful but rather elusive presence\, they are forced to confront that which is no longer there. To unravel the mysterious absences\, they embark on the improbable project of writing a book. Their erratic journey produces a book that reveals nothing and everything\, but above all\, that reflects the ardent light of a nascent understanding. \n\n\n\nJorge Armenteros was born in 1961 in Havana. Persecuted by the regime\, his family sought asylum as political refugees in Madrid. Soon after\, the USA granted his family entry and they transitioned through Tampa before settling in Puerto Rico. He was the first student in his school to be accepted to Harvard University. There he took several courses in Spanish and Latin American Literature while completing his biomedical engineering degree. Literature\, nonetheless\, was breathing inside of him. So\, he decided to pursue an MFA in creative writing at Lesley University in Cambridge. The Curvature of an Absence is his seventh novel.

SUMMARY:Author Night with Megan Doney & Chanlee Luu
DESCRIPTION:Join Blacksburg Books as they host Megan Doney (WFYP\, June 2008) and Chanlee Luu\, winners of the Washington Writers Publishing House Prize in nonfiction and poetry\, respectively. The authors will read from their books as well as talk about the writing process and getting published with a small press. \n\n\n\nMegan Doney – Unarmed: An American Educator’s Memoir \n\n\n\nAfter surviving a school shooting at New River Community College in Christiansburg\, Virginia\, English professor Megan Doney was traumatized and adrift. Rather than hardening her heart and life\, she wrote Unarmed: An American Educator’s Memoir. An insightful response to American gun violence and illusions of public and private safety\, it’s also about her journey over the past decade toward living with an open heart\, alive to luck\, learning\, and love. \n\n\n\nChanlee Luu – The Machine Autocorrects Code to I \n\n\n\nA knock-out debut that erases the boundaries of time and geography with unrestrained wit\, The Machine Autocorrects Code to I holds its subjects – family members at odds with their hopes and fears\, various fruits and animals constrained by the laws of humans\, and an alien seeking beauty in the world – with tenderness and wry knowledge of the fragile systems that hold their world in place. This universe of poems wanders through the messy past\, battles in the charged present\, and dreams/nightmares to the unknown future. In this experiment in forms\, Chanlee Luu is a mad scientist\, cracking Asian jokes\, shoveling golden sand\, and coding her voice to vitality.

DESCRIPTION:Join New Dominion Bookshop for a reading with Jody Hobbs Hesler (Fiction\, June 2017)\, who will read from her debut novel\, Without You Here. A conversation with author Louise Marburg will follow. This in-person event will be cosponsored by WriterHouse and will be free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nAbout the Book: Noreen is eight years old when her kindred\, namesake aunt\, Nonie\, dies from suicide. Now twenty-seven\, the same age Nonie was when she died\, Noreen is a young mother trapped in a marriage with a controlling\, manipulative husband. On the eve of the new millennium\, that marriage hemorrhages into crisis and Noreen must choose which aspect of her aunt’s influence to follow—the long grief after Nonie’s loss\, complicated by their secretly shared mental health challenges\, or her aunt’s dynamic love. Without You Here is about generational trauma\, mental illness\, sloppy family dynamics\, dangerous marriages\, and the beautiful\, redemptive nature of affection and love. \n\n\n\nJody Hobbs Hesler has written ever since she could hold a pencil and now lives and writes in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. She is the author of the story collection What Makes You Think You’re Supposed to Feel Better\, and Without You Here is her debut novel. Her short fiction\, articles\, book reviews\, and essays appear in journals such as Electric Literature\, CRAFT\, Gargoyle\, Arts & Letters\, and many others. She teaches at WriterHouse in Charlottesville\, Virginia\, and serves as assistant fiction editor for The Los Angeles Review. \n\n\n\nWithout You Here will be released on September 10. Pre-orders are available.
