SUMMARY:An Author Event with Suzanne Cope at The Hound Books
DESCRIPTION:Join The Hound Books for an author event with narrative journalist Suzanne Cope (Nonfiction\, 2007) as she discusses Women of War\, the gripping\, true\, and untold story of the Italian women’s resistance during World War II. In early September 1943\, Italy surrendered to the Allies. But the Nazis were prepared and quickly took over the country\, aided by Italian Fascist loyalists. Grassroots resistance fighters began organizing immediately\, and Italian women were integral to their efforts\, serving as underground soliders\, intrepid spies\, cunning saboteurs\, and much more. Using primary sources and brand new scholarship\, historian Suzanne Cope unearths the hidden history of the brave women who risked their lives to liberate Italy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSuzanne Cope is a scholar and narrative journalist\, and is the author of Power Hungry: Women of the Black Panther Party and Freedom Summer and Their Fight to Feed a Movement. Her work on themes of political and social change\, feminism\, food\, and culture has appeared in The New York Times\, The Atlantic\, Los Angeles Review of Books\, Food & Wine\, BBC\, Washington Post\, Aeon\, and others. She is a professor at New York University.

SUMMARY:Craft & Reading Series with Erin Cecilia Thomas
DESCRIPTION:How do writers bring vivid natural environments to life on the page? Join The Porch for a free craft class and reading with writer Erin Cecilia Thomas (Fiction\, January 2023)\, whose debut short story collection I Watched You from the Ocean Floor highlights various natural settings\, from the rugged California coast to Tennessee farmland to the Finger Lakes. \n\n\n\nIn her one-hour craft talk\, “Writing Natural Settings\,” Erin will discuss various techniques used in her own writing as well as by writers who have inspired her to use more nature-based settings. Participants will have the chance to experiment writing their own scene based in nature through a short writing prompt. Attendees will leave with practical techniques to strengthen their natural setting work. \n\n\n\nFollowing the class\, Erin will read from I Watched You from the Ocean Floor and discuss the writing process with fellow writer Melissa Jean. You are welcome to come to just the class\, just the reading\, or both!
