DESCRIPTION:Join us for this Cambridge Common Writers-hosted virtual alumni panel on navigating your writing career after graduation! We’ll talk about staying motivated to write without program-set deadlines\, managing the submissions/publication process\, as well as finding and embracing teaching opportunities. The discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A. \n\n\n\nMeet Our Panelists: \n\n\n\nNOVUYO MASAKHANE (Fiction\, January 2021) is an interdisciplinary artist: Writer\, dancer/choreographer\, filmmaker and educator. Born in Denver\, Colorado and reared in Southern California\, she’s been a working artist for over 40 years. Masakhane holds an MFA in Creative Fiction Writing from Lesley University and is currently working on her novel\, House of Jewels\, and a short story collection. Novuyo is a proud mama and grandma and makes her home in Los Angeles\, CA. Her published works include the short story\, “Miss Baby” (2009)\, “Born to Dance” (2010)\, an excerpt from her forthcoming novel House of Jewels\, and “Crossroads” (1997)\, a screenplay which became a short film with the American Film Institute.RAYMOND TYLER (Fiction & Graphic Novels\, June 2020) is a writer from Appalachian Georgia currently residing in Nyack\, NY. He’s a longtime social justice and labor activist\, mostly bridging “history from below” with comics. His work includes Black Coal and Red Bandanas: An Illustrated History of the West Virginia Mine Wars\, Partisans: A Graphic History of Anti-Fascist Resistance\, and Democratic Socialists of America: A Graphic History. DEBORAH SOSIN (Nonfiction\, January 2015) is a writer\, editor\, psychotherapist\, and GrubStreet instructor. Her essays have appeared in The New York Times\, Boston Globe Magazine\, Salon\, Oldster Magazine\, Brevity Blog\, Short Reads\, two anthologies\, and several literary magazines. Her MFA craft essay on the self as antihero in creative nonfiction appeared in The Writer’s Chronicle. Her picture book\, Charlotte and the Quiet Place\, illustrated by Sara Woolley (Parallax Press\, 2015)\, won the Gold INDIEFAB and Silver IPPY awards\, among several honors. Debbie is also the author of the Sober Starting Today Workbook (New Harbinger). In addition to her Lesley MFA\, she holds an MSW from Smith College School for Social Work. Since 2009\, Debbie has led “Write It Like It Is” freewriting groups. Her linked set of 70 micro-memoirs of 70 words each titled Escape Velocity: How One 70-Year-Old Push-Pulled Her Way Out of Her Too-Much-Not-Enough Family was published in February 2026 and was a finalist for the Next Generation Indie Books Awards (memoir).ANDREA BALLOU’s (Poetry\, June 2015) poems and book reviews have appeared in Barrow Street\, Copper Nickel\, FIELD\, The Ilanot Review\, Plume\, Plume Anthology\, The Missouri Review\, Tupelo Quarterly and elsewhere. Andrea received her PhD in Romance Languages & Literatures from the University of Chicago and her MFA in Creative Writing from Lesley University. Her work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize\, and she is also the recipient of a National Resource Fellowship\, a Tinker Foundation Grant\, Artist’s Fellowships and Project Grants from the Somerville Arts Council\, and a residency at Joya/AIR in Spain. She has been teaching weekly poetry workshops for elders at the VNA since 2018 and serves on the board of the Somerville Arts Council. Andrea divides her time between Massachusetts and mid-coast Maine\, where she tends 500 acres of forest.
